IUCN/SCC Otter Specialist Group Bulletin Volume 18 Issue 1 Pages 1 - 53 (April 2001) Congress Announcements 5th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT IN AMAZONIA AND LATIN AMERICA - SUSTAINABILITY CRITERIA Cartagena, COLOMBIA Colombia has the pleasure to invite to the Fifth International Conference on Wildlife Management in Amazonía and Latin America. This important event will be held at Cartagena de Indias between 10-14 September, 2001. Rapid reduction of wildlife populations in Latin America due to habitat loss and over exploitation are compromising the sustainable development of the countries of this region, since many local communities depend on wildlife for their subsistence. The definition and discussion of sustainability criteria for wildlife management is an urgent need. The discussion of this topic is the central objective of this conference, which is the most relevant meeting around wildlife management in Latin America. The discussions and conclusions will have an important impact in the whole region for scientists, decision makers and local communities representatives. The main objective of the Conference is to discuss, evaluate and divulge current advances in wildlife management in Latin America, having as main subject the definition and evaluation of sustainability criteria.
